@mdgoetz I've pulled this into a PR "from a cumulus dev" so that it can run against CI and be merged.
the shape of this looks good, there are a few places here where instruction is specific to a LPDAAC user managing the LP stack. as much as possible I'd like to make sure this is generalizable, although examples like images will of course be specific to where they came from.
