How do you use partitions in Music Player Daemon (MPD)

I am trying to use partitions in MPD (version (0.23.15-1~bpo12+1)) but get "unrecognized parameter" errors. Using client.newpartition in python also does not work although it shows there is a default partion. Is this functionality implemented in MPD or is this a future feature as I can not find any documentation or examples etc? Why do I get these errors?

From the MPD manual: Example for specifying an additional partition in the configuration file:

partition {
name "foo"
}

exception: Error in /etc/mpd_lounge.conf line 4; unrecognized parameter: partition mpd_lounge.service: Main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE mpd_lounge.service: Failed with result 'exit-code'.

Another example:

Usage in python script:

List existing partitions
partitions = client.listpartitions()
print("Existing Partitions:", partitions)

client.newpartition(lounge)

List partitions again to confirm
partitions = client.listpartitions()
print("Partitions After Switch:", partitions)

Result:

Existing Partitions: [{'partition': 'default'}] Error: name 'lounge' is not defined

I think you're looking at MPD 0.24 documentation but you're using MPD 0.23.

As far as I know I am using the latest version available. Does this note exist yet?

No, you are not using the latest MPD version. The latest release is 0.23.16, not 0.23.15. But you have been reading documentation about the upcoming not-yet-released MPD version 0.24.

How is the appropriate documentation found? https://mpd.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ is the "default URL", but it appears to be for ver 0.25, and there are no links from there to any other versions of the documentation.

Another link from the GitHub page: https://mpd.readthedocs.io/en/stable/user.html takes you to docs for ver 0.24.3. It's unclear what sort of system you're using here, so I'll just ask: Where are the docs for mpd ver 0.23.12 (default for Debian bookworm)??

there are no links from there to any other versions of the documentation.

There are links to other versions in the bottom right of the page at mpd.readthedocs.io. There are very limited versions available to select there. I don't know why that is, but it's not great. However, you can't expect documentation for old versions is always going to be kept available online for you. The fact that Debian stable provides old software is your choice as a Debian user. You can visit https://app.readthedocs.org/projects/mpd/builds/?version__slug=stable and find the docs build that corresponds to your old stable release (#19195626) but again, the actual documentation doesn't seem to still be available there.
