Extract document with .xls extension

Want to extract document with .xls extension. Can you guide me how should I do that?
when I tried with DocumentConvertor, it gives me error

Input document XXX.xls with format None does not match any allowed format:

Usually we would recommend to use something like LibreOffice to convert the xls into xlsx or pdf.
