After 15 seconds of erosion:

No erosion:

I found the 3D output of the erosion looks kind of like the Grand Canyon, so I went for that kind of look. I colored the terrain with horizontal bands of reddish-orange colors and added a flat water plane near the bottom. The shadows are a bit strange but I think it looks pretty cool overall.
