We've also done that (and I think @kayousterhout has too). Ext4 out
performs xfs in my experience, only by a marginal amount.

I've only used XFS (not ext4) -- xfs was enough for my workload for all of the anomalies of ext3 (mysteriously long shuffle write and read times) to go away.
