See comment and suggestion for further nitpicking of the language here – follows the format of can be read as using the format of the template, but developing content semi-independently, which isn't really true. So my suggestion is to shorten it even further to simply say follows the ....

As discussed with the team, the guide's development history is more complicated. Since the template was initially based on this guide, the goal is more about advertising the template than referencing it.
