Menus do not open under Lubuntu 18.10

I am using Lubuntu 18.10 (LXQt). I installed Oracle Java 8, and the latest Jabref available for linux (3.8.2). When it opens, none of the menus work-- when you click on them, nothing happens. If I open a .bib bibliography with Jabref (using OpenWith..) the database opens, but I cannot do much with it without the menus.

Note that the same data base used to work in both Windows and Linux (with previous versions of Lubuntu).

Steps to reproduce the behavior:
1.Open a .bib database with Jabref ...
2. .Click on any menu button..
3. ...
