Please explain "Welcome Wikipedia" and "Welcome Copyright" messages

The messages "Welcome Wikipedia" and "Welcome Copyright" look a bit strange. Why isn't it "Welcome to Wikipedia", for example? And why Wikipedia and not Wikitravel or Wiktionary? And what does "Welcome Copyright mean at all?

The easiest way to fix this is to edit the qqq pages in translatewiki.net and write the explanations there:

These are "content description", intended to serve accessibility purposes: https://developer.android.com/training/accessibility/accessible-app.html#contentdesc (I think it's similar to alt text added to images on webpages.)

Here, the two messages are supposed to describe these two images used in the first tutorial of the app.

For context, the images are supposed to summarize points that have been presented in the preceding screens.

How would you describe these? Actually the description could perhaps be overlaid to the images, not just being alt text.

If I understand the intention correctly, the images are supposed to communicate the idea that the images are supposed to be useful for Wikipedia pages and that they must not be restricted by copyright. If this is correct, then I'd call them something like "An image integrated into a Wikipedia page" and "No copyright restrictions".

"Welcome Wikipedia" and "Welcome Copyright" may communicate something to developers, but to users they would be just confusing.

Content Descriptions in the image view is not visible in the UI.
But this is useful in following accessibility scenarios where a user is blind. In that case image is read out as its content description. Hence Android suggest that we should set content descriptions for each image view and image buttons.
If we are going to change the content descriptions of these two images, I suggest to review the content descriptions of other images as well.

I'll be happy to help with that, if I can get a list. I report an issue about every message that I have trouble translating.

It will be a very good idea to mark every Content Description as such in the qqq messages, and then it will be easy to do such a review right in translatewiki.net, where I (and many other translators) feel very comfortable :)

This sounds like a webpage 'alt text' scenario, where a short description is associated with an image, to help people with screen readers, etc, to understand the content.

Do we know if this was ever corrected?

I reported this many years ago. It's still an issue, but now I've learned a bit more about how the app works, and I think that I can fix it myself nicely. It can be assigned to me.
