GitHub recommends to add a SECURITY.md document as a standardized way to let users know about these policies.

This is the recommended way on GitHub to describe policies revolving around
security issues and about supported versions.

Should the doc also mention the release candidate and snapshot version numberings? Perhaps as an aside..
e.g. that the formal release installer will claim that the release candidates are newer than the proper release.
And also even just noting the existence of the snapshots may encourage others to participate in the 'development'.
