Use the workaround suggested in matplotlib/matplotlib#30575. I'm subscribed to related issues so hopefully this won't have to live too long in our codebase, but I figured if a proper fix ends up on a weeks-months timeline (which it might) then we might as well put the workaround in place in the meantime.
