I got a Unknown Kotlin JVM target: 21 error message – see below – and had to set the jvmTarget with JavaVersion.VERSION_17 in kotlinOptions as well.

Error:

> Error while evaluating property 'compilerOptions.jvmTarget' of task ':managed_configurations:compileDebugKotlin'.
   > Failed to calculate the value of property 'jvmTarget'.
      > Unknown Kotlin JVM target: 21

Fix added to root build.gradle after compileOptions:

    kotlinOptions {
        jvmTarget = JavaVersion.VERSION_17
    }
