For me the intention for this request seems to have the same cause as issue #1177

I would say xmldom can only be null, if window.ActiveXObject is false or if this.xmldom was not set during initialize(). As pointed out in http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ie/dn423948%28v=vs.85%29.aspx window.ActiveXObject can't be used in IE11 anymore!

My proposed solution can be found in pull request #1285
