Code Review

Thank you for addressing this security vulnerability by upgrading nodemailer. This is a major version upgrade, which can introduce breaking changes. I've left a detailed comment on the change in package.json with some findings and recommendations to ensure a smooth transition to the new version.

Also, as noted by Snyk, the package-lock.json file was not updated. Please remember to run npm install (or the equivalent for your package manager) and commit the updated lock file before merging.

This upgrade to nodemailer v7 is a major version change and introduces several breaking changes. While this is necessary to fix the security vulnerability, it's important to verify that the application is compatible with the new version before merging.

As noted in the PR description, package-lock.json has not been updated. Please run npm install (or your package manager's equivalent) and commit the updated lock file to ensure dependencies are resolved correctly.

I've reviewed the usage of nodemailer in the codebase and found a few areas that might need attention due to the breaking changes:

  1. Plugin API Change: In src/jobs/RegistrationMail.js:32, Mail.use() is called with await. Mail.use() is a synchronous method, so await has no effect and can be removed. More importantly, the plugin API has changed in nodemailer v7. The handler function is now expected to be async and no longer uses a callback. If mailtemplategen is a custom plugin, it may need to be updated.

  2. Invalid DKIM Options: In src/services/emailService.js:201-207, the DKIM configuration includes cacheDir and cacheTreshold. These options are not supported by nodemailer's built-in DKIM functionality and will be ignored. They seem to originate from the old nodemailer-dkim plugin, which is no longer needed.

  3. Callback-based sendMail: In src/services/emailService.js:256, sendMail is used with a callback. While this is backward-compatible, the send() method doesn't propagate errors to its async callers. Consider refactoring send() to be async and use promises for consistent error handling.

    Example refactoring for send() in src/services/emailService.js:

    async send(mail) {
      // ... (existing guard clauses and mailOptions setup)
      if (!mail.to) {
        return winston.warn("EmailService send method. to field is not defined", mailOptions);
      }

      try {
        const info = await this.getTransport(mail.config).sendMail(mailOptions);
        winston.verbose('Email sent:', {info: info});
        if (mail.callback) {
          mail.callback(null, {info:info});
        }
      } catch (error) {
        winston.error("Error sending email ", {error:error,  mailOptions:mailOptions});
        if (mail.callback) {
          mail.callback(error);
        }
        // Consider re-throwing the error for callers to handle.
        // throw error;
      }
    }

Please review these points to ensure a smooth upgrade.
